"One for the Books"

Today has been another one for the books. The excitement in the students has not died down as all team members rotate to different schools everyday. We have been nothing but impressed by all the students and the people who have welcomed us into their community. Over the past few days, the students have really shown us how it does not take a lot to be happy, especially if you embrace everything that you have.

At the Kilema primary school, my class focused on analyzing stories and answering questions that they had to find the answer to within the story. They learned very quickly on how to distinguish nouns and pronouns as well as being able to identify them in a sentence. My team mates and I taught geography as well. Pictures of ENSS that were included in my lesson really intrigued them. They were all respectful students who were eager to learn. I loved seeing them demonstrate their excitement by participating in class and wanting to answer questions. The students in my grade 6 class were very happy to learn that they could keep the handout from today's class. They were repeatedly saying "thank you" which to me, speaks volume. Over the simplicity of a work sheet, these students were beyond grateful. We then ended the school day with some games, music and dancing which they really enjoyed. These students have impressed me every single day and I cannot get enough of them. This experience has brought me so much joy and I am excited for what is to come! -Camille

My time at the Mykashi school today was really outstanding. Abby and I taught a grade 7 class, who continued to shock us as the day went on. We started with an English lesson that was about sounding out words. We worked hard with the students on their pronunciation and understanding of rhyming words. Our geography lesson was eye catching as we showed pictures from Canada explaining what our culture is like. They surpassed all of our expectations, to the point that they laughed when we messed up. They were so patient and respectful, saying yes after everything we said to show their understanding. Before lunch, they sang us a song as we departed and said thank you after thank you until we could no longer see them. We returned with a review period of what we taught in the morning and then it was time for gym! We sang the "Bananas" song with the children and admired their laughs, even though they were laughing at us dancing crazy. We brought out skipping ropes that were a hit! They wouldn't stop jumping nor smiling the entire time. We were asked to take a picture with the Head Mistress and teachers, along with Sister Mary who continously thanked us for what we did with the students. Everyone in Tanzania is so thankful and they show appreciation to everyone for everything. I'm blown away by everything so far and ready for what's ahead. - Madi

As a team we ended our day by watching the children play soccer, which seemed like a tournament as the field was packed with different coloured jerseys. The team was able to meet more students from the secondary schools in Kilema and build more relationships on the side lines. Some team members played against the children, winning 3-1 which we are SUPER proud of. Our night ended with a fantastic dinner and a presentation by Bonnie Gary (from CSRAI) and Gordad about the various needs of schools in the Kilema area based on her discussion with the Principals at each of the schools. A team discussion followed on what projects our fundraising money will be put towards. No final decisions have been made but a good discussion of the various issues was had. Over the past few days, the team has bonded over every aspect of this trip. We have been giving each other tips and sharing our experiences. Today... was a great day! Overall, this trip has been not only amazing but also eye opening in every way possible. Our expectations have been surpassed everyday along this journey. We are thankful for this opportunity and are given more reasons to be thankful everyday!

See you soon!

Camille and Madi :)

You are really capturing the magical moments and messages of your work in Tanzania. It's possible you will long to stay or return... but if you bring home all the learning you are doing you can change lives here in Canada, yours included!
